Your Children Create the Masterpieces

What’s fun to make, has your children as the painters and will be a great memento of your their youth? It’s a BODY PAINT PIECE OF ART. Here’s how.

1. Use a piece of stretched, framed canvas larger than your child and the paint used is acrylic or latex water-base house paint. The color brown is used here. Let the canvas dry.

2. Once dry, now the fun can begin. If you don’t have access to an outdoor venue because of accidents, then make sure to have a drop cloth under the canvas. Using again the same type of paint, use a different color (white here) and paint the back of your child. You have the option to have them “in their birthday suits” or lightly clothed. The less amount of clothes the better the imprint. Once fully painted, then carefully have them lay down for the imprint. This can also be done with hand prints or foot prints as well.

3. If there are any drips of paint or light foot prints you want to erase, then use the canvas color of paint and paint over.

Baked Eggs with Chicken Sausage and Cheddar

It’s not quite a frittata and it’s not quite a casserole, but this BAKED EGGS WITH CHICKEN SAUSAGE AND CHEDDAR is a fantastic way to start the day. And my friend Ali helped me create this new dish for THE BASICS.

INGREDIENTS
8 eggs
5 cups french bread, 1/2″ cubes
2 cups chicken sausage or non-flavored sausage, cut up or diced
1/4 cup milk
2 cups cheddar cheese, shredded
1 medium yellow onion, diced
2 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
salt
pepper

DIRECTIONS
1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees.

2. Using a small pan saute onions with oil. Leave to the side.

3. In a medium bowl, beat together eggs, milk, salt and pepper. Leave to the side.

4. In a 9″ x 12″ non-stick pan or cooking dish, place the bread on the bottom, then layer with chicken next, then onions and pour eggs over. Top with cheese.

5. Cook for 20 minutes in oven.

SERVES: 6 | TIME: 30 minutes

Beef and Cauliflower Stew

With the cold temperatures outside, a hearty meal of BEEF AND CAULIFLOWER STEW is just what the doctor ordered.

INGREDIENTS
2 pounds beef (Angus here), 1″ cubes
8 cups beef stock
1 head of cauliflower, buds separated
6 celery stalks, diced
3 turnips, diced
1 large yellow onion, diced
10 -12 fingerling potatoes (purple here), diced
1 cup barley
2 bay leaves
2 tablespoons worcestershire
1 tablespoon lemon juice
3 tablespoons olive oil
salt
pepper

DIRECTIONS
1. In a dutch oven or large stockpot, saute onions in oil until lightly brown.

2. Reduce heat and, except for barley, add remaining ingredients. Cover with lid and on low heat cook for 40 minutes, occasionally stirring.

3. After 40 minutes add barley and cover again. Continue to cook and stir for another 40 minutes.

SERVES: 8 – 10 | TIME: 1 hour 30 minutes

Hello Foodies. This is for all of you who like to bake, cook, grill, roast, saute, fry, mix, steam and basically do anything remotely related to food. Starting on March 13th, THE BASICS will have a new section called, Most Delish. Each week, Most Delish, will feature one lucky reader’s recipe along with a photo of that recipe. This is your chance to have your dish or beverage showcased and viewed by THE BASICS readers.

• The first recipe submission is your favorite dinner dish. Think outside the box or should I say souffle dish. Just write in your recipe’s name and title and if you like, a brief description, or why it’s your favorite. Is it an old family recipe or one your family loves. Once the winning recipe is chosen, then you will be asked to submit two photos of the dish. Good Luck!
