A Shirt Christmas Ornament

December 4, 2010

One of the wonderful aspects about the holidays is it brings  families together to either help in the holiday decorations, cooking of seasonal treats or even sing some festive carols.  This decorative CHRISTMAS ORNAMENT USING AN OLD SHIRT is a project you can do with your children and only requires a few items.

3″ styrofoam ball
old shirt (this purchase from the Salvation Army for $1.99)
red ribbon
long skewer or ice pick

1.  Cut out two shapes from the shirt about 3″ in width.  HINT:  squares, pentagons and triangles work best.

2.  Using one of the points on the scissors (watch children when doing) gently push the two pieces of fabric that share a common edge into the styrofoam ball.  Continue around the entire edges of both pieces of the fabric making sure it’s securely in the ball.

3.  Cut another piece of fabric and do the same process making sure to start against one on the edge from the previous one.  You should slowly build out from this and continue until the entire ball area is covered

4.  Using the skewer or ice pick, go through the center of the ornament creating a small hole.  Cut a piece of ribbon at least 10″ in length but to desired length to hang.  Tie a knot at one end and gently push through the ball with skewer or ice pick.
